Should Smith and Warner bans be reduced? Guardian cricket writers have their say

Image
31 October 2018 | The Guardian   Opinion is split on the Australian Cricketers’ Association’s bid to lift the ball-tampering sanctions Former Test captain Steve Smith has been playing grade cricket for Sutherland while he serves his ban: Getty Images A national debate is raging over calls from the Australian Cricketers’ Association for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft for their roles in the ball-tampering affair. Monday’s release of the Longstaff review found Cricket Australia to have allowed a sour culture to develop within the organisation that manifested in the lamentable events of Cape Town in March. The findings prompted the players’ union to pursue what it sees as “natural justice” and have the disgraced players’ bans immediately lifted, allowing them to return in time to feature in the upcoming summer of cricket. Four of our cricket writers have their say. ‘An executive whitewash’ Should the three ...

Cricket Australia 'arrogant' and partly to blame for ball-tampering, report finds

Image
29 October 2018 | The Guardian   Damning report finds CA had ‘win-at-all-costs’ mentality Review says ‘Australian cricket has lost its balance’ Tim Paine and Josh Hazlewood faced the cameras in Melbourne to present the players’ review: Getty Images Cricket Australia has been branded “arrogant” and “controlling” and partly responsible for the ball-tampering incident that led to bans for former captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner. An independent report into the organisation’s culture found there was “strong systemic and organisational input” into the decision to cheat during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town in March. Interviewees said Australian cricket’s governing body adopted bullying behaviour, ostracised people and created a “win-at-all-costs” mentality that pushed players to “play the mongrel”. The strong words of the review are likely to lead to calls for more lenient sentences for Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron ...

Pakistan cricketer Abbas celebrates after dismissing Australian cricketer Marnus: AFP Television channels digging up corruption in world cricket through sting operations is nothing new. One such expose resulted in blowing up the 2000 match-fixing saga, resulting in shaming, banning and conviction of a couple of great cricketers of that era. Now Al Jazeera has come up with a documentary, their second this year, listing 26 scams in 15 matches involving international sides. Though the channel has not named players, it has given details of one bookie, the Mumbai-born, Dubai-based Aneel Munawar, and his conversation with an unidentified England player involved in the reprehensible act. As for pictures of him standing at a vantage point near stars, they are normal as all shady characters make it a point to get p...

Raza and Morris both played for Mumbai Champs, a team in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League between 2007-08. Al Jazeera said Raza did not respond to its allegations, while Morris "denies any wrongdoing" and said the channel invited him "to audition for, and act in, a commercial movie 'for public entertainment'." Raza made his debut for Pakistan as a 14-year old in 1996, becoming the youngest man to play Test cricket. He was part of seven Tests and 16 ODIs but has not played any international cricket since 2005. Raza had gr...

Image
23 October 2018 | ESPN-Cricinfo  Hamza Tariq , a 28-year old wicketkeeper, is currently the only Canada player contracted in the CPL, having been part of Trinbago Knight Riders for three seasons. He has played 93 times for Canada, but at the start of 2011 World Cup he was a 20-year-old reserve just six matches into his senior team career when he was targeted in a corrupt approach by three men allegedly tied to illegal bookmakers. Here is his story, as told to Peter Della Penna . Canada's wicketkeeper Hamza Tariq in action during practice at the 2011 World Cup: AFP I was probably the last player at the 2011 World Cup who would have expected to be approached by someone attempting to involve me in corrupt activity. I was only 20, had just played at the ICC U-19 World Cup a year earlier, and was not well established in the Canada team. I never thought someone would approach a Canada player, and if they did then, in my own mind, I thought they would want to go after a sta...

Five Australian cricket matches have been fixed, according to a bombshell report into match fixing in the sport. Cricket Australia two months ago effectively cleared Australian players of any wrongdoing surrounding a report earlier this year which linked two unnamed Australian cricketers to corruption claims. Al Jazeera on Monday morning (AEDT) published a second series of allegations against cricketers around the globe, claiming 15 matches from January, 2011, through to September, 2012, were fixed. Australia played in five of the matches alleged to have involved moments of spot fixing. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said in a statement that the Al Jazeera claims are “unsubtantiated and incorrect”. ...
